What is TMS?
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a non-invasive out-patient based procedure used for the treatment of different mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. It is also successfully used for neuro-rehabilitation.
TMS relies on the generation of brief magnetic fields created by an insulated coil that is placed over the scalp. These magnetic fields, in turn, create weak electric currents in the brain that achieve brain stimulation by activating neural circuitry at the site of stimulation.
By stimulating brain circuits, TMS aims to reset neural circuits and induce a change in their activity in order to bring about an improvement in conditions such as depression and anxiety.
What is standard TMS?
Traditional TMS, practiced in most TMS centres around the world, relies on blanket stimulation over the left side of the head.
The exact site of stimulation is generally derived by placing a cap over the head and obtaining the target area by measuring distances from landmarks such as the nose or with a target point drawn onto the cap.
With this approach, for obvious reasons, the actual brain stimulation site varies tremendously between people. Variation is not only due to differences in the shape of our skull but more importantly variation is the result of significant difference between people’s brains. In one recent reputable study, it was shown that this traditional approach can lead to over 50% of brain stimulation sites being off-target, during treatment.

The human brain, composed of 86 billion brain cells that fire on average 17 trillion times per second is the most complex structure in existence. This miracle of creation is responsible for who we are – our ability to talk, to walk, our thoughts, our actions, our feelings…
Clearly, every brain and by extension, every person is unique. Until recently, understanding individual brain connection variations between people was not possible.
Through breakthroughs in both MRI imaging and AI, we are now able to understand these variations and build personalised brain maps that allow us to individualise TMS targets, based on your own brain (big)data. This personalised brain data approach to TMS has recently been accepted as a superior treatment method by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)2.
At Connectomix, we arrange an MRI scan (Approximately 25 minutes) that allows us to obtain highly sophisticated information about your brain connections.
We process this information with machine learning algorithms that allow us to understand how different parts of your brain are talking to each other in the form of brain networks. By analysing your brain networks, in conjunction with your clinical symptoms, we are able to pin-point the areas of your brain, that have the highest probability of treatment response to TMS. Hence, we are applying personalised brain medicine to your clinical problem.
As we are using highly sophisticated brain maps to pin-point TMS targets, targeting accuracy is central to the service we provide and blanket stimulation of the left side of the head, as employed in traditional TMS, is not an option.
At Connectomix we use sophisticated brain navigation technology that allows us to pinpoint brain areas on your scalp with millimetre accuracy. We also have extensive procedures in place to ensure accurate TMS targeting is achieved.
